The promise of Summer 2023 is now a reality: Sidekick has stopped being an assistant and has become your co-pilot.

The promise of Summer 2023 is now a reality: Sidekick has stopped being an assistant and has become your co-pilot.

In July 2023, Tobi introduced Sidekick as a vision of the future.
Today, after 18 months of consistent architectural decisions, that promise is now production code.

While many saw isolated releases, Shopify was quietly building a solid foundation for AI-native development.

Some clear signals:

  • Massive expansion of Custom Data

Metaobjects with limits that scale to hundreds of thousands—or millions—of entries by definition, designed for structured data, not just metadata.

  • MCP servers for Developer Docs

Shopify exposes its documentation natively for LLM consumption. This isn’t marketing—it’s infrastructure for agents.

  • shopify.dev optimized for models

Every page includes .md and .txt versions, semantic search, and a structure designed for machine interpretation, not just human reading.

  • Polaris rewritten in Web Components and React

Consistent APIs across Admin, Checkout, and Customer Accounts. A UI system ready for automatic generation and dynamic extensions.

None of this was accidental. It was strategic, AI-driven engineering.
And the result today is clear: Sidekick now generates fully functional apps.

Apps that:

  • Define and persist data in metaobjects
  • Import and export information
  • Connect directly to the GraphQL Admin API
  • Build real UIs with Polaris components

All automated. All functional. In minutes.

Editions, from a developer’s perspective

As a developer, I can only be grateful:

  • Flows created in natural language
  • From Headless to POS Extensions, the entire stack is queryable and actionable
  • Custom data with virtually no limits
  • Sidekick generating and modifying real theme blocks

This is no longer a helper—it’s an agent with context, data, and execution.

As a partner agency, the game changes

Merchants will gain far more technical autonomy.
Our value will no longer be in writing basic code, but in architecture, orchestration, and judgment.

The real differentiation becomes how you combine:
Flows, Extensions, Custom Data, Themes, Marketing Automation, and Payments
to scale real businesses.

The plot twist: Shopify as a global marketplace

Beyond AI, there’s another strong signal:
Shop, Collective, Product Network, Shopify Payments…

Shopify is starting to behave like the ecommerce operating system it has long predicted.

Some inevitable questions:

  • Merchants sharing inventory globally
  • Unified but multi-merchant checkouts
  • Payments handled transparently underneath
  • Customer Accounts as a shared layer across multiple stores

If we think of the new customer accounts as just another app…
will we soon see orders from multiple stores in a single place? 🤔

Conclusion

AI is not just another feature.
It’s the abstraction layer that allows any merchant to operate with enterprise-level logic.

And every architectural decision since Summer Edition 2023 has been quietly preparing the ground for this moment.
